Montreal’s Gay Strip Clubs: A Brief Overview

One thing that many gay tourist come to Montreal to enjoy are the plentiful gay strip clubs. That’s right, Montreal supports four, count ‘em, 4 gay strip clubs which is more than many cities much bigger than Montreal. And what is allowable in Montreal’s famed strip clubs has been known to make even the most experienced strip club connoisseur blush. As a starting point, we’ve assembled a very quick overview of Montreal’s 4 gay strip clubs all located in the Montreal Gay Village and in later articles we’ll give each a more detailed look.

Campus is the first of the strip clubs you’ll encounter as travel east along Sainte-Catherine Street and it situated just East of Rue Amherst. It’s a big club and quite popular on weekends. Early in the day, starting at 3pm, you can find a mix of strippers, from the slim twink to the massive body builder. But after 9pm, stand back for muscle beach because it’s pretty much beef cake only. Campus has a large stage area and good viewing from pretty much anywhere in the bar. Private dances are available in specially designed booths to the left of the stage. You will usually see a big selection of dancers there on any given night or day (and you might even recognize some of our own models working there). You’ll want to avoid Sundays, Ladies Night, because most of the Str8 male dancers work that night and are there primarily to get laid rather than to make money.

Next on our walking tour of Montreal’s erection spectacles we encounter the world famous Stock Bar, or Bar Stock as they say in French. Stock is probably the most upscale of all the gay strip clubs with glamorous decor, a special shower for wet shows, and live video streaming of the stage shows. The people at Stock Bar have equally high standards for their models, employing only those dancers that y0u might expect to see as models. They’re muscular but not overly muscular, well dressed and in most cases they put on a very respectable stage show. During the week Stock Bar has special nights with events like “Porno Bingo” and “The Mr Stock” contest. The dancers are mostly Str8 but can be very friendly if  you can lure them away from the pool table. Also, as in any strip bar, remember that money talks.

The eastern-most strip club along the St Cathrine strip is Cabaret JP’s. If you patronized the strip clubs prior to 2010 you might know JP’s as Adonis. But sometime a couple of years ago, a former dancer from Stock Bar bought this smaller strip club, did some renovations and put his name on it. JP’s is a smaller club, for square footage, and though I haven’t conducted a census, I would guess that the number of regular dancers they have working there is a bit less than at the other two bars. Dancer-type is a mixed back ranging from the cute, skinny twink to some older, hairy muscle men. The club seems to suffer from inconsistent business, some weekends being packed with customers and weekends you can hear the crickets at the end of each stage show. Unlike all the other strip clubs, women are welcome at Cabaret JP’s all the time (other clubs restrict female attendance to specific nights). This can be a bit disconcerting to some gay men who are looking for woman-free strip club experience, but for most part the open gender policy has little impact on the ambiance of the place.

Slightly off the beaten path, Taboo, or Taboo International as it is formally known as, at the very eastern extreme of Montreal’s gay village and it’s one block north of Sainte-Catherine. Patrons of Taboo go there to enjoy view of young, skinny, smooth twinky twink type boys and has remained pretty much true to that reputation over the years. Back in the heady days of the internet boom and US dollar that bought you $1.60 Canadian dollars Taboo was a bustling place with lots of dancers and lots of customers. The place has seen a bit of decline over the past few years but don’t let that deter you. If you like the young ones, there is still lots of fun to be had at Taboo. Taboo has been the last club that held out from putting curtains on it’s private dance booth’s but apparently they are intending to bow to customer and dancer pressure for greater privacy and add curtains very soon.

So there you have it, the quick primer on the strip club scene in Montreal’s gay village. Where else can you go and see so much penis within a 20 minute walk?
